One of the frustrating things about Blood Bowl 3 was that it launched without features Blood Bowl 2 had, including ways for players to manage their own multiplayer leagues. Being able to remove teams when players drop out and decide which special rules your tournament wants to play with are basic features for a Blood Bowl game, and only now, 11 months after release, have they been added.
As the blog post explains, these admin tools are in beta. Currently, they let a league commissioner award star player points and gold to individual teams, replace missing players with AI, and set tournaments to resurrection mode—a popular format where teams reset between matches rather than following the normal rules for progression, injury, and death.
Other features still to come include “options such as activating/deactivating pitch rules or configuring the exhibition table for prayers to Nuffle” and “anticipated advanced features such as the manual seeding in competition and the…
World of Warcraft recently began a series of what it calls experiments in the industry’s pre-eminent MMO, aiming to give players a wider range of ways to engage with Azeroth and each other. First was Plunderstorm, a piratical battle royale that encourages bitesize PvP encounters, with a Mists of Pandaria remix also on the horizon.
Plunderstorm has proven both popular and divisive, as one might expect, with many players delighted at the appearance of such a fun one-off (in a game that, let’s remember, most have been playing for years) while others groan and grumble about whether the game’s losing its identity (alongside the usual threats to cancel subscriptions).
The limited-time mode is due to end on April 30, and until then Blizzard has doubled the XP gains to lessen the grind. That’s great news for everyone except PCG’s own Fraser Brown, who’d just spent two days grinding for his fancy new mount. World of Warcraft executive producer Holly Longdale …
Diablo 4 will be playable to anyone for another weekend to test server stability in May, Blizzard announced in a stream today.
The Diablo 4 “Server Slam” playtest will go from May 12 through May 14 and will let you earn the previous beta rewards as well as a new one for defeating the world boss, Ashava.
The beta will take place in the same location, the Fractured Peaks, as the last ones. Characters from the previous two beta weekends will not carry over to the Server Slam test and any progress you make during it won’t carry over to launch. You’ll have to choose from one of the game’s five classes and play a new character up until the Server Slam’s level 20 cap.
Here’s exactly when you can pre-load the Diablo 4 Server Slam beta and when it will start:
- Early download: May 10 at 12 pm PT
- Beta start time: May 12 at 12 pm PT
- Beta end time: May 14 at 12 pm PT
If you hit level 20 and…
I’m conflicted. On one hand, the just-revealed Dungeons & Dragons crossover cosmetics for Destiny 2 evoke the same “sensory whiplash” that Morgan Park described back in November when writing about shooter skin collabs. On the other, my Titan would look rad riding an Owlbear. Who among us doesn’t enjoy an occasional sip from the homogenizing slurry of brand synergy?
Given our post-Baldur’s Gate 3 world and Wizards of the Coast’s recent fondness for Magic: The Gathering crossover collaborations, these Faerûn-inspired armor sets were probably on somebody’s Destiny 2 comarketing bingo card. When the cosmetics arrive alongside The Final Shape in June, you’ll be able to buy a suit of high fantasy draconic plate armor for Titans, a cyberpunk-styled take on D&D’s displacer beast for Hunters, and a set of mind flayer-themed robes for Warlocks—complete with a tentacle-heavy helmet. Sincere congratulations to anyone who can successfully style that last …
Cain on Games is back with another dive into the lost history of Troika. This time, Tim Cain has been digging through the proposals Troika sent out to various publishers as work on Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines was winding down, and he’s come up with a doozy.
It turns out that in June, 2004, Cain pitched a third-person action RPG based on Conan the Barbarian. As he explains in the video, the Dungeons & Dragons campaign he ran in high school was set in Conan’s Hyborian age because “it was one of the few fantasy series with a map that my friends hadn’t read,” which meant he had “extensive notes on all the countries, on languages, on cultures, on how magic worked” he’d written up as a 14-year-old. Thank goodness for the obsessive teenage nerd brain.
The proposal features an example of what it would be like to play Conan as he infiltrates a temple of Set to steal the Heart of Ahriman. In the classic Tim Cain-style seen in Fallout and Troika’s RPGs ther…
September 2023 provided a prime example of why we can’t have nice things, as an anniversary collaboration between Amsterdam’s Van Gogh museum and the Pokémon Company descended into scalper-fuelled chaos. The event was intended to celebrate the museum’s 50th anniversary and featured Van Gogh-inspired art of Pokémon by key series artists: but the big mistake was that attendance came with a limited-edition Pokémon card.
As soon as the exhibition opened, it was flooded by unscrupulous individuals looking to get as many cards as they could, and sell them online at a huge mark-up. The card in question is Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat, inspired by Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat, and currently goes on eBay for anything between $100-350. Just over two weeks after opening, the Van Gogh museum threw its hands up, and stopped distributing the cards entirely.
The exhibition nevertheless continued as scheduled until its closing date on Janu…
If you’re in the mood for some free games, Young Horses has them: The developer of Octodad and Bugsnax has released a series of four “smaller side projects” on Steam, and it’s giving them all away for nothing.
Naturally, the games in the Young Horses: Free Range collection aren’t the biggest-budget or most highly-polished games of all time. But you also don’t have to pay for them, and let’s be honest, that goes a long way. As Young Horses said, “It’s free, so there’s only so disappointed you can be!”
With expectations appropriately managed, the little mini-games look potentially fun, or at least cute and silly enough to be briefly entertaining. They also make for an interesting look back at the indie studio’s history, extending back to the days before it even existed. Here’s the rundown:

Cities: Skylines 2 has announced that eight new regional building themes will come to the city builder via the Paradox Mods distribution platform. Created by a variety of well-known modders from the Cities Skylines modeling scene, the new packs will be Japan, UK, East-coast USA, West-coast USA, China, France, East Europe, and Germany
Spread across these thematic regions will be over 2500 new assets. These will join the two already in-game, the more generic European and American themes.
“We’ve teamed up with some of your favourite creators, including Titan, bsquiklehousen, Darf, RichardShi, MacWelshman, Badi_Dea, Feindbold, Gurny, and many more, to bring you 8 Free Region Packs, coming soon to Paradox Mods!,” said the announcement. Accompanying the announcement was a teaser trailer about the packs showing off the creators and some works-in-progress.
It’s definitely exciting news for people interested in adding some flavor to their cities. Themes are broadly compatib…
AMD’s new Ryzen AI 300 APU looks super exciting for handheld gaming but what about the battery life–
Of the two big announcements AMD made today, it could be the new Ryzen AI 300 series APUs that’s most exciting. Not only does it come with the same new Zen 5 CPU cores as the other major newness from AMD, the Ryzen 9000 series desktop CPUs. It’s got a majorly upgraded integrated GPU that should boost performance substantially.
Some key questions immediately follow. Will Ryzen AI 300, formerly known as the Strix Point APU, appear in handhelds? And if it does will it get the top-spec chip and what are the implications for battery life?
The fastest of the new AMD Strix Point APUs at launch is the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. It ups the graphics compute unit or CU count from 12 in AMD’s previous-gen APUs, such as the Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip found in the OneXPlayer OneXFly, to 16. The new GPU also gets a small clock speed bump from 2.7 GHz to 2.9 GHz.
Those two elements alone would imply a gaming performance bump of about 35%. However, Strix Point’s new iGPU is also upgraded to…
I suppose it was only a matter of time before Taskmaster got its own VR game. The game show, in case you’re unfamiliar with it, is about giving celebrities and comedians increasingly absurd tasks to fulfil—with very few clues on how to get those tasks done.
Similarly, a lot of great VR games offer an experience that’s basically just that: a vague task, a physical space to muck about in, and absolutely zero training. Most of the physical comedy in VR Games is decidedly Taskmaster, they’re just based around figuring out how to reload a gun, rather than throwing something over a fence.
I’ll be honest: I don’t think Taskmaster VR is going to set the world on fire. It’s a licensed TV show game. It does, however, look like a bit of clean fun, fumbling about in 3D space while Greg Davies (a British comedian and actor known for being dry, witty, and very goddamn tall) critiques your performance.
Uh, speaking of—the art style really is something. Like, …
Blizzard Entertainment has announced that its new president is Johanna Faries, who previously spent nearly three years as the general manager of Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. Faries will replace Mike Ybarra, who unexpectedly announced his departure when Microsoft laid off 1,900 employees from its gaming division last week.
In an email sent to Blizzard employees, Faries said “Activision, Blizzard, and King are decidedly different companies with distinct games, cultures, and communities,” and that she’s taking on the new position “with sensitivity to those dynamics, and deep respect for Blizzard.”
“I am committed to doing everything I can to help Blizzard thrive, with care and consideration for you and for our games, each unique and special in their own right,” Faries wrote. “I’m optimistic about our ability to serve our current and future player communities, and to further amplify the shared passion for greatness, polish, and creative mastery that is a hallma…
There are currently 627 developers working at CD Projekt Red, and as the studio revealed during its financial year 2023 earnings conference, 403 of them are now dedicated to work on Project Polaris, which is to say, The Witcher 4. (Thanks, RPS.) Meanwhile, the skeleton crew left to work on Cyberpunk 2077 updates has shrunk to 17, while its sequel, codenamed Project Orion, has a team of 47 and is presumably still in the early stages.
Answering shareholder questions after the conference, joint CEO of CD Projekt Red Michał Nowakowski patiently explained that, no, he would not be able to reveal the release date of the next Witcher game in a conference call. “Revealing the release date is basically part of the marketing plan and that’s not something we’re willing to do here,” he said.
Nowakowski did, however, talk about the risks CD Projekt Red was taking by innovating in certain areas of the upcoming game. “Making [a] new game is always a creative risk,” he said, “espec…
Oof, the trials and tribulations the CPU market is facing right now… Between Intel CPU stability issues and mass AMD CPU underwhelm, there might seem to be frighteningly little room for optimism. But the rumour mill keeps on churning, as always, and is now spitting out word of even more potential changes for AMD’s mid-range 9000-series chips.
According to tech leaker chi11eddog, the newly released AMD Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X will have their TDPs boosted to 105 W. This change is rumoured to be pushed in an AGESA 1.2.0.1a Patch A BIOS update.
Both these Zen 5 CPUs launched with a low 65 W TDP and plenty of reviews noted how power-efficient and thermally light they are. Unfortunately, performance increases over equivalent previous-gen Ryzen CPUs were slight and talk of “Zen 5%” abounded. Given their launch prices being far more expensive than the current pricing of the Ryzen 7000-series chips they’re replacing, it’s unsurprising they don’t seem to be flying off th…
Just like with cozy farm sims, there are way more monster-taming PC games to choose from than there were only a few years ago. It’s easy to miss some of the smaller contenders, so I’m glad I managed to catch Anode Heart. This monster taming RPG launched just last week and, based on what I’ve played in its demo, is doing a great job channelling the good old aughts.
Anode Heart’s developer Stochastic says that it is a “homage to the classic monster tamer games of the early 2000s,” and that’s super clear as soon as I start. Anode Heart doesn’t bog me down in too many tutorials or backstory right off the bat. It trusts that I’ve played games like this before so it doesn’t need to get long-winded while introducing a professor-like character who wants me to choose one of three elemental type Tamas to train and the digital device I’ll use to record all the other Tamas I encounter and tame. After a bit of dialogue and a snappy battle tutorial, I’m off into the world.

Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor released in early access in February, and developer Funday Games and Ghost Ship Publishing have announced that the spinoff of Deep Rock Galactic has now sold over a million copies. A Vampire Survivors-inspired take on the joys of dwarves space-mining in extreme peril, the initial reception has been positive and left our own Robin Valentine “much more hooked than I expected.”
It’s good times for fans of beards, with the OG Deep Rock Galactic having now sold over 8 million copies itself and gearing up for its fifth season (which starts in June). Deep Rock Galactic released in early access in 2018, moving into full release in 2020, since when it’s followed a live service style seasonal model and gone from strength to strength. Deep Rock Galactic Survivors is published by Ghost Ship Games, a publishing label established after the original game’s success, and there’s more to come: cooperative roguelike spinoff Deep Rock Galactic: Rogue Core will …
Dead Cells developer Motion Twin revealed its new game during a surprise announcement at The Game Awards tonight, a high-speed roguelike battler called Windblown that sets players off on a quest to protect their home of floating islands from the invading forces of the Vortex.
As Leapers, players will move through the open, ever-changing world known as The Ark, a place “teeming with secrets” and, unfortunately, overrun by deadly Sentinels, the minions of the Vortex. Leapers will have multiple weapons at hand and can shift their builds on the fly, and also have the ability to absorb the memories of their fallen predecessors, enabling the use of stronger and more complex weaponry and allowing players to push deeper into the game with each new run.
“Windblown’s combat is tough but always fair,” Motion Twin said. “Every run is a lesson, so learn from your countless deaths, memorize enemy movements and leap back into action stronger than ever.”
Very broadly, Windblown’s …
Star Wars: Dark Forces was the first big film tie-in first-person shooter, and it was hugely impressive upon release in 1995. It wasn’t as fast and bloody as Doom but it was definitely Star Wars, and that’s what mattered most. It captured the spirit of the films really well, and with some fascinating tech trimmings to boot: the Jedi Engine allowed for some ambitious level design.
So it was probably only a matter of time before Nightdive Studios took its remaster magic to it. Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster will release in “Q4 2023” with the usual spit and polish improvements, in this case:
- 4K
- Up to 120fps
- Advanced 3D rendering (basically: better lighting and effects)
- Gamepad support (there’s a weapon wheel, for example)
- Steam achievements
- Remastered cutscenes and “content”
Dark Forces and its sequel were precursors to the Jedi Knight series and are among the best Star Wars games going. Like Rise of t…
Call of Duty’s insatiable hunger for SSD real estate continues. According to official system requirements released by Activision today, all installs of Modern Warfare 3 will first require that you have another program installed: Call of Duty HQ.
If you’ve been playing Modern Warfare 2 or Warzone the last few months, you’re already using Call of Duty HQ. It’s essentially just the rebranded main menu for Warzone and MW2 that’s capable of launching other CoD games. Modern Warfare 3 will be the first new CoD to require that HQ is installed, and it leaves a large footprint on your SSD—around 45-57GB, according to Activison’s numbers. Its mandatory inclusion, as well as the ability to selectively install different pieces of Call of Duty, has resulted in the most convoluted “Storage Space” section in a system requirements grid I’ve ever seen.
Here’s how it breaks down: if you have Warzone and HQ installed already, Modern Warfare 3 will add an additional 78GB, for a total …
Prospective urban planners looking forward to Cities: Skylines 2 will need to get the PC version if they want to play this year. While a simultaneous launch was previously announced, Colossal Order has now pushed back the console release date, targeting a spring 2024 launch instead.
Colossal Order and publisher Paradox Interactive released a statement with the bad news today, as well as an update on the official forums.
We are hard at work getting the game ready for our release on October 24th. While doing so, we have come to realize that we need more time to reach the quality targets we have set. As we want to provide the best experience for our players, we are updating the release window for Xbox and PS5 to Spring 2024. The additional time allows us to focus on matching the quality and performance across all platforms.
While Cities: Skylines is undeniably a more comfortable fit on PC, the last game’s console ports worked surprisingly well, th…
Feedback for early access survival games typically comes from two sources: players who want things to be harder, and players who want things to be easier. Give people a big open world and some will always want a supremely challenging experience, while others will want to do some farming, build a base, and have a chill experience with their friends.
Enshrouded just took a crack at making both camps happy at once: the survival game’s new “Back to the Shroud” update is packed with difficulty options. In fact, it’s overflowing with them. There are now over 30 difficulty settings (31!) you can tweak to shape the game into the precise experience you’ve been looking for.
You can start with some expected sliders that let you change options like how much damage enemies and bosses do to you, how much health monsters have, and how your own health, mana, and stamina scales up or down in comparison. But you can even tweak finer settings like how far monsters’ range of perception reac…
LG has been showing off its gorgeous M3 OLED TV for a couple of years, calling it the “world’s first wireless OLED TV” at events like CES without a hint of a release date or price. At the time, I felt it would not be cheap, and boy, was I right.
Big TV enthusiasts can finally order the 97-inch LG OLED M Signature Series for the heart-stopping price of $29,999.99. That’s right, for roughly the cost of a preowned Honda Passport, you too can have a 97-inch 4K OLED TV with a 120Hz refresh rate.
So, why’s this thing so pricey? It’s because the TV itself is entirely wireless (except for the power cord). It uses LG’s proprietary Zero Connect technology, which is basically a box that takes off your device inputs like cable boxes, consoles, and PCs, then beams it to the TV wirelessly from up to 30 feet away.
Our biggest concern is latency when playing a game. Nothing on the product page indicates what sort of response time you get when playing videogames, …
Lost Boys Interactive has become the latest Embracer-owned studio to undergo layoffs, as former producer Jared Pace said on LinkedIn (via Game Developer) that “a sizable portion” of its workforce has been let go.
The Lost Boys Interactive website describes the studio as “a wholly owned yet independent subsidiary of Gearbox Software,” and “a proud member of the Embracer Group.” Its past credits include Square Enix’s The Quiet Man, and less unfortunately, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and Diablo 4. It became a Gearbox studio less than two years ago, in June 2022.
“It seems a sizable portion of Lost Boys Interactive was laid off today, including myself,” Pace wrote. “Still trying to understand the scope of it all, but sadly—this is a song and dance we’re all familiar with.”
Pace’s report was corroborated by numerous other Lost Boys employees including art director Nick Barone, who described the layoffs as “the hardest day of my career.”
“Even though I was spared…
Deep Rock Galactic and Helldivers 2 have a lot in common. They’re horde-shooters about deploying to hostile planets where you shoot bugs—still, a crossover hasn’t emerged yet, though that’s not a shocker. Not only has the game been out for just over a month, it’s also been bombarded with major server issues thanks to its runaway success. It’s safe to assume that Arrowhead Games has been very busy, in the same way that the ocean is very wet.
That hasn’t stopped the charmingly chaotic scamps over at Deep Rock Galactic developer Ghost Ship Games (who recently mobilised its fanbase into making ‘dwarf’ an official Steam category) from shooting their shot. As spotted by GamesRadar, the developers streamed Helldivers 2 over the weekend as a gesture of good will to Arrowhead Games.
“We just downloaded this new reskin mod for Deep Rock Galactic,” jokes one of the trio, as they stand with their arms outstretched like aliens coming in peace. “We emailed Arrowhead a while back…
Dragon Age’s lead writer has taken to Twitter (sorry, X) to sing the praises of Baldur’s Gate 3. Having completed the game, David Gaider has made clear to the world his appreciation for the writing skill, and the love and care the devs at Larian Studios have put into the vast branching narratives of this true Game Of The Year contender.
He does, however, feel the need to bring up some problems he perceived with the game’s romances, bugs, and outro—or lack thereof.
“As someone who worked on BG2, my very first game in the industry, I gotta echo what everyone else has said: this resurrected the feeling of it in every way. Hats off to @larianstudios for all the love that clearly went into this. A worthy successor.”
When one commenter calls for Gaider to join forces with Larian Studios, and use his expertise to breathe life into the characters and scripts of the future, his reply is complementary to say the least.
“They have love…
Layoffs have been one of the defining events of the games industry this year, with thousands of jobs being cut across dozens of companies, all attempting to slash costs as the rapid economic growth of the pandemic years comes screeching to a halt. No company is more emblematic of both these extremes than Embracer Group. In the last few years, Embracer has embarked upon a frenzied spending spree, snapping up studios like Gearbox, Crystal Dynamics Eidos Montreal, and many more, all apparently to stack the decks in a deal with an unknown partner worth at least $2 billion.
But that deal fell through, saddling Embracer with $1.5 billion in debt. Immediately, Embracer began a ruthless effort to start climbing out of the red. The company laid off 904 people between July and the end of September, which included closing Volition, the developer of Saints Row. An unspecified number have also been laid off since, and those won’t be the last either.
In the midst of all this, Embracer…
Embattled PvP dungeon crawler Dark and Darker has a new fight on its hands, but at least this one won’t happen in a courtroom. It needs to clamp down on the cheaters that have taken to the game after it finally hit early access a couple of weeks ago, in spite of the legal troubles that continue to keep it off Steam.
“Right now we are fighting a difficult fight against cheaters as we gather information with [Dark and Darker’s anticheat tech] Ironshield,” wrote Ironmace dev “Graysun” in a post on the game’s Discord (via PCGamesN). That means the studio is bringing out the big guns, by which I mean a Discord bot that you can send evidence of cheating, so long as you do it in a timely manner.
“The fight against cheating is a serious priority for us, and to further support our community we will offer a Discord account you can directly message with your evidence of cheating for the next 30 days,” wrote Graysun on August 17, encouraging players with video evidence of cheating t…
Blizzard’s live-service looter-clicker Diablo 4 was released on June 6 of last year, meaning it’s about to celebrate its first anniversary. Rather than the traditional paper-themed gift or a clock or something, it’ll be celebrating with a week of free cosmetics and a pair of events called the March of the Goblins and Mother’s Blessing.
The free gifts will appear in the in-game shop between June 6 and June 12, though players will have until June 20 to claim all of them. Based on Blizzard’s blog post, it looks like we’ll be getting a weapon skin for each class and a couple of mounts.
The March of the Goblins event will run from June 6 to June 13 and will increase the number of treasure goblins appearing in-game, as well as the number of greed shrines—which make enemies drop gold whenever they’re hit. Inside dungeons, treasure goblins will begin appearing in pairs, and possibly larger groups. A good time to stock up on the cash you’ll need to pay for transferring abil…
